Bhutan Innovative Community

Introduction

Since the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development or Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the critical importance of innovation and change has been repeatedly highlighted to create a more sustainable society. Many of the principles have been reflected in Agenda 21 and despite these efforts, many
environmental conditions of on the globe are deteriorating, prevailing consumption patterns are still unsustainable. Many environmental problems are characterized by their complexity, uncertainty, and the fact that they require dynamic approaches by society, if they are to be successfully addressed. The issue of climate change, for example, needs to be understood from many angles, because it impacts biodiversity,
land degradation, natural disaster rates and agricultural production. Similarly global climate change affects local communities and the resulting local behavior can, in turn, contribute to global climate change. The solutions to environmental problems can be reflected in its complexity, which can be implemented through close coordination of efforts of different stakeholders with a diversity of knowledge and skill sets. Such
coordination often requires drastic change to existing management structures and beyond development.

Innovative communities will often compliment and provide new way of thinking about development. It requires new analysis of the ways in which development needs to be addressed what the negative impacts may be, and how it can be reduced or eliminated. Inspired by the agreements of the Earth Summit (Rio 92) and the Royal Government of Bhutan’s Civil Society Act 2007 to develop an innovative form of Public Benefit Organization for cooperation for achieving Gross National Happiness.

As a result of this process, the (Research on Indigenous knowledge Community and Environment) Bhutan – Innovative Community, a non-governmental organization is proposed, to work for development of small community and raise awareness amongst the local community on sustainable development process to achieve Gross National Happiness.
